The annual MOT test for vehicles over 3 years has been in place since 1960 and a recent proposal to extend the time between test to 2 years would result in millions of dangerous vehicles on the roads.
In April 2022 Transport secretary Grant Shapps has put forward a proposal to remove the need for an annual MOT, in favour of a test every 2 years. The proposal is believed to have been made in an attempt to reduce living costs and is incorrectly justified by the advances in technology for cars.
The latest DVSA MOT test figures show that around 30% of all MOT tests in the UK result in a fail. Around 10% of these are for a ‘dangerous item’. This 10% equates to over 720,000 vehicles that would be on the road with at least one dangerous item. Millions of faulty cars would be going unchecked for two years.
Reaction to the proposed MOT change has been met with very vocal criticism and as an approved MOT test centre Premier Group is against these plans which will make the roads of the UK less safe for everyone. The extension of MOT testing periods will simply give irresponsible motorists a 2 years pass to drive unsafe vehicles with no mandatory checks. Issues such as excessively worn tyres will remain unchecked for longer and the effects of this do not bear thinking about.
The potential savings are also not significant. An MOT test at Premier Group remains just £40. Cannock drivers would save just £20 per year. Certainly not worth the increased danger and risk for all motorists.
Let’s hope this is the end of the proposal for MOT test to be every 2 years.
